As you know by now, Reading Is Fun! Imagine That! is packed with learning tools at the end of each fun-filled, rhyming story-poem. Because words are the foundation of our language, I thought it would be fun to talk about some interesting ways for children to learn the words found in these chapters before they read them (so they can then re-familiarize themselves with those words when they’re finished reading the chapters!).
In a story-poem about the importance of saving money, words such as “funds,” “thrift,” “wages,” and “account” can be found at the end. Try writing these words on a hand-sized, four-sided square beanbag that can be tossed into the air. Whatever word lands “heads up” will be the word your child learns that day. You can teach them to use it in a sentence and then read the story-poem so their comprehension of the word skyrockets!
Another fun and educational game to play is to write the following words onto four different rocks: “permanent,” “remain,” “lead,” and “measure.” Then write their definitions on the backs of the rocks. Hide the rocks in your yard and send them off on a scavenger hunt. When they retrieve the rocks, spend some time reading through the words, understanding them, and then applying them when you read the story-poem titled “Stained Glass.”
Another story-poem, titled “My Future,” is all about letting children imagine what their future will look like. It discusses growing taller, learning to ride a bike, and going off to college, among other important life lessons. Why not incorporate the words they’ll learn at the end of this chapter by creating a “My Future” board that includes these words? For instance, the end of this particular chapter contains the following words: “Decide,” “employed,” “adventures,” and “prefer.”
Why not write these words on the board, and define them with your children as you discuss them. Imagine the conversations it will start between all of you as you teach them their meanings (and how they apply to them growing up).
I love that the words in Reading Is Fun! Imagine That! can be played with and used as learning tools. One of my favorite things about teaching is doing so when the student doesn’t even know s/he is learning! The colorful pictures and playful words in my book are simply fun for children to read and look at. Finding creative ways to further learn new words is something I highly encourage.
The last idea I have for your children to learn new words from Reading Is Fun! Imagine That! is this:
Make a matching game for them. Use white index cards and choose words from the chapters in my book. Write them on the backs of the cards, place them face down in rows and columns, and play a traditional matching game. When your child turns the cards over as they try to make pairs, have them recite the word from the card and its definition. Depending on how many words you use for the game, this one could take a while, and a lot of learning can be done!
